What Factors Dictate How Your Sub Enclosure Is Designed:
How well a sub-box works is dependant on the specifications of the subwoofers being used and the amount of space available and needed for the subs, as well as the design and layout of the vehicle. No matter if you want to build a full-on custom box with fiberglass panels and neon lights, or just a simple box that won't cost you the a retail shop is charging, it all is designed and assembled the same way. This website is sticking with a basic sub-box design. |

Design It To Fit:
You need to know what the specs are on your subwoofers. How much volume and air space does the sub need to operate at its best. Does it need ports or a sealed box. How much room do you have for a box, and how do you want it to look. These are the main things to think about when designing your box. In a simple square or rectangle box, the volume can be calculated by adding the length, width, and hieght of the box. Thats fairly easy. The design is also relatively easy, providing that you remember your own skill-level with power tools, and wood working. A simple way to get the best sound and look is by building a simple box and making it look the way you want by adding facia panels.

Building The Box:
Make sure your measurements are right before you cut the wood. Take into account that if you are building a box that is supposed to be 12" tall, and you're using 1/2" wood, that the side walls should be cut 11" tall. The 1/2" thick bottom and top of the box will make up the 1" difference between the 11" walls and the 12" desired hieght. Draw your design on paper and keep it with you when you begin to build it. Stay with your design. Don't change things midway through the project. You will always have ideas while you are building, but if you keep changing your design plans as you build, you will never complete anything. Thats why facia panels are great. They don't change the function of the box, but they can easily change the appearance of it. Facia panels are the last step.
Once the box is built, fit it into the vehicle where you want it, before you cut out the holes for the subwoofers. It may take several trims and cuts to get the box exactly where you want it,so take your time. Cutting holes for the subs is a finishing part, don't rush it or you may mess the box up.
Once the box fits where you want it, then you can decide where to place the subs on the box. Don't "eye-ball" this - use the rulers to make it look as even and as nice as possible. After you cut the holes, test fit the box again to make sure that it looks right. If you are carpeting or upholstering the box, do it before you install the speakers and speaker terminals.
Once the box is finished, install it and secure it to the car or truck. Then install the subs and any facia panels for cosmetic appearances. Thats all that there is to building a simple subwoofer enclosure.
